Wonder Recipes- the Groundnut snack
Crunching noisily with undisguised delight, eight-year-old Fadi suddenly freezes, then turns and looks straight at me.
"What?", she queried. " Haven't you ever seen someone chewing?"
I hurriedly appologised, and then told her of my curiosity about her snack, which to me looked so appetizing and attractive. Her annoyed expresson quickly transformed into a glowing one, evidently relishing the prospect of having to unravel the fascinating process of creating a batch of fried groundnut paste to an ignorant human being.
"First, your mindset must be prepared, for the process is an age old tradition that is very much respected", she declares. " Then you take all the time you need in birthing a magnificient batch of fried groundnut cookies."
Fadi has been in the business of commercialising the delicacy for as long as she knew it, that is, approximately all her life, for her paarents introduced her to the trade.
Smiling at my enthusiasm as i hurriedly squatted before her, she reverently placed the ingredients infront of her.
"You begin by grinding the groundnut into a paste, then straining the oil out using a clean cloth, if you haven't an adapted machine. then, cutting appropriate portions with the hand, you shape the paste with a rubbing motion, and fry in deep oil" she explains, with each motion.
She then sets it out to drain, and artfully arranges the fries in the bowl, ready to hit the road for sales of the day.
"Never mind, i will let you practice some other time, for business calls", she says, winking at me.
As is the unwritten tradition, i make the first purchase, then wish her a fruitful day.
